So much has changed over the decades, but back in the 1920s it was all about Art Deco and modernism.
The style was very glamorous and sophisticated, with geometric shapes, shiny fabrics, nature motifs and touches from the orient.
Furniture:
Strong streamlined shapes, single pieces of furniture
Floors:
Plain polished parquet floors or black and white chequerboard patterns.
Fireplaces:
Rectangular and bold with a stepped profile
Colour schemes:
Bold colours, such as silvers, black chrome, black and white.
Lighting:
Female figures holding glass ball, glass lamps that are etched or sandblasted.
Fabrics:
Very shiny and light reflective
Objects:
Tortoise shell trinkets, singular statues and ostrich feathers.
The modern day version of the Art Deco era is glamorous and spells out statement. Shiny surfaces mixed with wooden angular furniture, I love this mixed look together with a black and white colour pallette.
Taking a few objects from 1920s mixed with 21st century fabrics can be beautiful and interesting. You can make a feature just with parquet flooring or just with paint colours from the 1920s. You really don’t have to go the full hog!!!
